Predynastic Period (5500-3100 BC) [Permanent agricultural settlements under local rule]

Early Dynastic Period (3100-2686 BC) [Most of Egypt first united under one ruler]
   1st & 2nd Dynasties

Old Kingdom (2686-2181 BC) [Era of the great pyramid builders]
   3rd-6th Dynasties

First Intermediate Period (2181-2055 BC) [Egypt disintegrated into smaller kingdoms]
   7th-11th Dynasties

Middle Kingdom (2055-1650 BC) [Central rule restored]
   11th-14th Dynasties

Second Intermediate Period (1650-1550 BC) [Central rule lost following Hyksos invasion]
