Saturday, 1 April (continued). Our visit to Toledo was less than three hours, and we really wished it could have been longer. We saw El Greco’s house and museum, St. John’s Cathedral and cloister, and the fascinating “donkey shops” (vendors selling tourist goods stacked on the wooden saddles of their donkeys). We also visited a jewelry “factory” where the artisans demonstrated the ductility of gold. Jane bought a pair of black metal earrings with a design inlaid in gold.

We left Toledo at 18:40 to return to Madrid. We had dinner ala automat in the train station from small, coin-operated windows. Our express train to Lisbon left at 22:00. We traveled in second-class couchettes, sharing a bathroom with the next unit. It’s always hard to sleep on a train, and a party going on next door didn’t help. Nevertheless, it was a very efficient way to get to Portugal without losing a day traveling.
