We drove into Agios Nikolaos for the "English breakfast" we had seen advertised at one of the restaurants on the lake. It consisted of two eggs, some half-cooked bacon, a thin wiener, cold baked beans, toast and coffee. It was a big breakfast, but it wasn't very good. We bought some fresh fruit at a produce store and headed back toward Iraklion around 9:45. It was a pretty, warm day. We got to the Archeological Museum in Iraklion before 11:00. Most of the artifacts found at Knossos and the other Minoan palaces are on display there. They also have the original murals from the walls. (Copies are displayed at the ruins.) We had been here, too, in 1973, but we couldn't remember any of it. It was very interesting. It was amazing how they had reconstructed large wall murals from relatively few parts of the originals. We finished about 1:30 and ate lunch at the museum. We left the car in the museum parking lot and walked the few blocks down to the harbor. It turned out there were plenty of places to park, so we had walked a lot for nothing. There was a Venetian Harbor here, too, though, larger and less picturesque than those at Rethimno and Hania. We saw the Venetian Arsenal and toured the 16th Century Venetian Fort, now completely restored. I walked out to the ferry dock and found out we could board at 4:00. (Jane was tiring fast.) We walked along the waterfront, stopped by the Avis office to be sure we could find it, then back to the car. I dropped Jane off at the ferry where she waited while I returned the car. When I got back (puffing from running the half mile back), we boarded about 4:40. Departure was scheduled for 7:15 p.m. The ferry was large, very modern and well appointed. After doing some exploring, we got settled in our cabin, then rested. Guess who got the top bunk. At 7:15 we went to the main lounge and watched as the ferry sailed. We were among the first to the dining room. It was a beautiful setting, like the most expensive restaurants. The prices were quite reasonable, though. Unfortunately, our waiter was very sullen. We had a Greek salad, roast veal with potatoes. Jane had fruit "compost" for dessert. The food was good, but everything had been prepared in advance and was brought to the table at the same time. (It's a good thing we didn't have soup or order ice cream for dessert.) We also had a bottle of Minos Castillo red wine. It was more than we normally would drink with dinner, but we polished it off easily. It was after 9:00 when we got back to our cabin, and we went right to bed.
