ALPINE REPRISE A Quiet Birthday Friday,
September 26. Jane's birthday! We spent
the day packing and exploring the area
around the hotel, including the
adjoining military post. In the evening
we had a prime rib dinner at the
Edelweiss with another couple (the Bonneys). The rest of the group went to
a German restaurant, but we declined to
join them because they would be getting
back too late. We had to get up at 5:15
a.m. the next morning. Going Home
Saturday,
September 27. By prearrangement, a taxi
picked us up at 6:00 a.m. to take us to
the train station where we would catch
the 6:35 bus to the Munich airport. We
were at the airport by 8:30. We had
ample time for breakfast there before
reporting for our 11:40 nonstop flight.
Our trip back went smoothly. We landed at Dulles just after 3:00 p.m. Joseph met us at the airport. Julia had even sent some sandwiches and fruit along with him in case we were hungry. We got back to Massanutten at 7:00 p.m. Observations. What can I say? We were looking for nostalgia and we found it. Everywhere we went rekindled fond memories from decades past. Our farewell to Elfie was perhaps the most poignant. We regretted that we did not spend more time with her but we were too unsure of her condition to plan an extended visit. Overall, we enjoyed the visits to our old haunts much more than if we had gone to places we had never been.
