AND THE COTSWOLDS PHANTOM OF THE
OPERA
Saturday, May 21.
We
slept late and then spent most of
the morning washing clothes. We
had no plans until the evening
when we planned to see the Phantom
of the Opera in the West End
theater district. I had purchased
the tickets online weeks before.
Andy was going to take us to
dinner before the show and, about
11:00, asked me for the exact time
of the performance so he would
know what time we should eat. I
remembered that the evening
performance was at 21:30, but I
got out the tickets just to check.
I could not believe it when I saw
the tickets were for the matinee
at 14:30. We really had to rush to
get ready. Then there was a long
line at Her Majesty’s Theater. We
finally were seated just a few
minutes before the curtain went
up.
Jane and I had seen the Phantom twice before, but this performance was really different. Most notably, it was the loudest performance by far. We enjoyed it very much, as did Andy and Liz, who had not seen it performed live. Afterwards we walked through the theater district over to Covent Garden. We took a quick look inside the Apple Market. We were naive enough to expect a fruit market, but it was a electronics store. Then we walked north a few blocks to the Rosso di Sera (Evening Red), a rustic Italian restaurant, where we had reservations for 18:00. It was a very pleasant place with excellent food. They featured dishes from the Le Marche region, next to San Marino. The tube got us back to Andy’s about 2100. In retrospect, we realized it was fortunate that our tickets to the Phantom were for the matinee. We had an early start planned for tomorrow morning. |
